Winemaker Notes

It's hard to believe that this classic-tasting Ruby Mountain blend came from such a hot twelvemonth. This vino exudes a lot of dark plum, black blood-red, lush cocoa, black licorice, earth, and a bear upon of cassis. There is quite a bit of that unique Crimson Mountain spice mix of cinnamon, clove, nutmeg and ginger. The palate is rich, lush, and full yet not overdone. It shows restraint but also has a power to it that is unmistakably terroir-driven. The flavors of chocolate, nighttime fruits, spice and a touch of vanilla a such a practiced combinationyou'll find yourself sipping on this for hours; which is never a bad matter.

WS 93

Deep scarlet-colored, the 2016 Crimson Mountain checks in every bit a blend of 38% Merlot, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Syrah, and the residue a mix of red varieties, all anile 20 months in twoscore% new oak. It offers a bang-up bouquet of pure cassis and darker fruits besides as loads of cedar, dried flowers, and hints of new leather. Medium-bodied, seamless, incredibly pure, and layered, it's straight-up loaded with amuse and a joy to drink. There's a decidedly Old World weight and style here, yet it doesn't skimp on fruit either. I'd be thrilled to potable bottles over the coming decade or so.

James Suckling

This offers a brambly assortment of night berries, espresso and cedar on the olfactory organ with attractive toasted spices. At that place's a very fine, fresh and evenly paced feel on the palate with quite pure dark berries at the eye of a fine-grained tannin frame. A blend of 76% cabernet sauvignon, 14% merlot, v% syrah; 4% cabernet franc and 1% malbec. Drink or concur.

Wine & Spirits

This estate blend is by and large merlot and cabernet, with cabernet franc, syrah, malbec and other varieties in trace amounts. Information technology'south savory from the kickoff, with scents of cedar and pino bark, fume and tarry traces of oak. The flavors are suave and plummy, driven past an amaro savor and a stop of lean, dried fruit, with the tannins for grilled caprine animal.

Hedges Family Estate, Washington

Hedges Family Estate Annual Foot Stomp Winery Image

It was 1986 when Washington native Tom Hedges found his first employment in the vino industry marketing American wines in Taiwan. From that humble beginning, Hedges Cellars, then a "virtual" winery, institute its starting time client: the government of Sweden. Tom and his wife Anne-Marie marketed their Cabernet/Merlot alloy to strange buyers exclusively for two years before going domestic and opening upward North American distribution. Withal without their own winery, they took a chance buying acreage on an obscure piddling hill called Red Mountain.

The Hedges take concentrated their efforts on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and the concept of terroir since their first vintage in 1987. With Anne-Marie Hedges' roots and childhood in the Champagne region of France, it was but natural that a French-style chateau would be built on the slopes of Red Mountain amongst their vines.

Their daughter, Sarah Hedges-Goedhart, is the head winemaker with their son Christophe Hedges beingness the General Manager. Hedges Cellars transitioned to Hedges Family unit Estate, and farming practices became more focused towards existence organic, vegan, and some of our vineyards are existence certified Demeter. Our future direction is clear: we will continue to work as a family unit to unite farming, winemaking, and the promotion of our wines and the Red Mountain AVA.

A coveted source of tiptop quality red grapes among premier Washington producers, the Red Mount AVA is actually the smallest appellation in the land. Every bit its name might suggest, information technology is really neither a mountain nor is it equanimous of red world. Instead the appellation is an anticline of the Yakima fold belt, a series of geologic folds that define a number of viticultural regions in the surrounding surface area. It is on the eastern edge of Yakima Valley with slopes facing southwest towards the Yakima River, platonic for the ripening of grapes. The surface area's springtime proliferation of cheatgrass, which has a reddish color, actually gives the area the name, "Reddish" Mountain.

Red Mountain produces some of the most mineral-driven, tannic and historic period-worthy red wines of Washington and in that location are a few reasons for this. It is just about the hottest appellation with normal growing season temperatures usually reaching above 90F. The soil is particularly poor in nutrients and has a high pH, which results in significantly smaller berry sizes compared to varietal norms. The low juice to skin ratio in smaller berries combined with the strong, dry summer winds, leads to college tannin levels in Red Mountain grapes.

The most common ruby grape varieties here are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah, among others. Express white varieties are grown, namely Sauvignon blanc.

The reds of the area tend to limited night blackness and blue fruit, deep concentration, complex textures, high levels of tannins and equally previously noted, take good aging capabilities.
